Department of Economics Academic Year 2023-24 Activities Report

The academic year 2023-24 for the Department of Economics has been marked by a series of engaging and enriching events aimed at fostering learning, interaction, and skill development among students.

  1. Pragya Club Inaugural Event (24th August 2023):

The Pragya Club’s inaugural event kicked off with great enthusiasm, attracting 125 students from all three years of college. Through fun games and activities, students built valuable interactions, fostering a sense of community. This event also served to raise awareness about Pragya Club activities, with students proposing topics for future events. Notably, two students from SYBA secured prizes, highlighting the event’s success.

  • Visit to RBI Monetary Museum (31st August 2023):

A visit to the RBI Monetary Museum provided insights into the historical significance of coins from ancient to modern periods. Students learned how coins reflect economic conditions, enjoying the exploration of various coin types and their historical contexts, where 38 students participated from Commerce as well as Arts section.

  • 2nd Session Pragya Club (13th September 2023):

The second session of the Pragya Club saw active participation from 126 students of B.Com and B.A , where four students namely Aman Maurya (SYBA), Manoj Ruparelia (SYBCom), Yash Ruparelia (SYBCom) and Hardik Rathod (FYBCom) presented on diverse topics such as Titan submersible, Chandrayaan-l|l, and the Indian economy in transition respectively. These presentations facilitated research and communication skills development among students.

  • Employability Week (4th to 11th December 2023):

Organized in collaboration with College IQAC, the Employability Week aimed to enhance students’ job prospects through workshops and seminars which was inagruated by an eye opener session for students and graced by our notable alumni Mr. Yash Pawar who is Analyst at Deloitte, Ms. Oindrilla Seal, Financial Consultant at Ersnt & Young and Mr. Nitesh Sharma, Associate Regional Manager at Motilal Oswal that provided encouragement to students, to know about the job market. In continuation with the motto of the event series of skills such as interview skills by Dr. Preeti Vaswani, Technical skills by Mr. Aditya Shastri who is Manager with Ed Tech Partnership with IIDE, current trends in job market for economics students by Mr. Mitul Mewada, Chief Operating Officer at Imarticus Learning and Ms. Lourdes Miranda, Assistant Vice President at Imarticus Learning. Last but not the least the week ended by talking about Impression management at workplace by Dr. Zarin Sethna Clinical Psychologist, Associate Professor and Retd. Head of Department of Psychology, which all proved a great success which participation of 40 students daily, as it equipped them with valuable insights and resources.

  • Orissa Educational Trip (16th to 22nd December 2023):

The educational trip to Orissa provided TYBA students with a profound understanding of the region’s spiritual, cultural, and economic aspects. Visits to Jagannath Puri Temple, Konark Temple, and Raghurajpur Village that allowed students to explore the rich heritage and research on how tourism contribute to the local economy.

Throughout the academic year, the Department of Economics has remained committed to providing holistic learning experiences, nurturing both academic excellence and practical skills essential for students’ future endeavors.

“An Introduction to Data Analysis using R software and MS Excel”

The certificate course on “An Introduction to Data Analysis using R software and MS Excel” a 4 days (20 hours) intensive course was an initiative of Department of Economics.Ms. Samiksha Jadhav, Asst. Prof, Department of Economics, was the course coordinator where as Mr. Chinmay Joshi, Asst. Prof (Ad-Hoc), Department of Mathematics and Computers was the course instructor.  The lectures for the same were held on 16th, 17th, 18th and 25th August, 2019.It was conducted in the college computer laboratory from 9am to 1pm. There was a huge response from the students for this course as 49 students registered and participated in it. The course covered the theory as well as practical related to soft tools in R software and MS Excel. Students also appeared for an online test conducted by the course instructor and their performances were evaluated.

“My idea behind introducing this certificate course was to equip our BA and B.Com students with data analysis tools that have practical applications in life. Students are introduced to statistical concepts and tools for data analysis at FY, SY and at TY levels through various papers. But the use of the same tools in soft wares like MS-Excel and R software is hardly taught to them through the syllabus. This certificate course was introduced to fill this lacuna in the syllabus. Also, these soft wares are available easily in the market at minimal cost, so the students can continue practicing even after the course is completed. Data analytics being an upcoming field, this certificate course is just the first step towards being Data analyst.”

“The most important aim of the certificate course was to make students learn the use of soft tools. On completion of this certificate course, students are now able to perform basic data analysis activities using soft tools. Now students are able to use the functions like data sorting, data simulation, regression, graphs etc.,using R-software and MS Excel. They can create their own data and clean the data using the above tools. They are well equipped to understand the use of data and soft tools and ready to take the challenge for becoming Data Magicians.”
